THAI AirAsia and Cambodia Angkor Air have launched new Siem Reap routes.

Thai AirAsia, a subsidiary of Malaysia-based low-budget carrier AirAsia, will start direct flights between Siem Reap and Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport on October 1, as the airline looks to expand in the regional market.

Flights on the Airbus 320 will go between Bangkok and Siem Reap every day.

“Our focus this year has been in Indochina,” said Thai AirAsia CEO Tassapon Bijleveld on Monday at Don Mueang Airport.

Traffic from the region made up a quarter of the airline’s total sales. Siem Reap will be the airline’s sixth destination after Yangon, Mandalay, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Phnom Penh.

More than 30 per cent of tourists to Cambodia come into the Kingdom via Thailand, said Ho Vandy, co-chair of the government-private sector working group on tourism.

On Sunday, Cambodia Angkor Air started up on charter flights from the Chinese city of Xiamen to Siem Reap.
